Oluseyi

(aka Beboz)

Oluseyi (aka Beboz) is an emergent textile design artist based in London.

Born and raised in Italy, from Nigerian descent, as a millennial, the class of 2024 artist would like to emphasise a more forward-thinking approach with the idea of representing the result of past socio-cultural circumstances.

Through his textile works, not only limited to designs, he also aims to recognise mutual patterns, providing an introspective view of his identity as a black individual.

His journey has been wide and well-structured, immersing himself in the complexity of tangible and intangible in any single project.

For the past 3 years, he’s been investigating the relationship between nature, humans and technology, intending to challenge the audience to establish a conversation regarding matters such as belongingness and human existence.

The Grain Forest

WORK DESCRIPTION

For the past three years, each summer has become a time to reflect on the relationship between humans and nature. As urban environments become increasingly overbearing, the desire to escape from modern buildings and find comfort underneath the trees of a forest, where breathing the silence of the soliloquies in the middle of nowhere, becomes the only peaceful thought of tranquillity.

My work as a textile artist merges the natural elegance of wood with Japanese-inspired aesthetics, using washi paper and light to explore translucency, texture, and tradition in a cinematic and contemporary expression. This project seeks to celebrate wood as one of the most timeless materials, honouring its complexity while embracing its simple elegance.

Inspired by the refined aesthetic of Japanese interior design, I rediscover elements like sliding doors as pure expressions of art, transcending their functional origins. By focusing on the dialogue between washi paper and light, I explore how translucency transforms interior spaces, evoking the essence of wood within its natural ecosystem.

The result is an immersive experience that could suggest wandering through a dense forest where sunlight filters gently through leaves and branches. My goal is to establish a conversation about belonging and human existence, inviting the audience to reflect on the spaces we inhabit and the materials that shape them.

Welcome to the Grain Forest—a place where we (404) cannot be found, where nature and design meet, and where tradition and modernity coexist in harmony.
